Piobaireachd Competition
The Druim a' Charraigh Quaich is presented annually by The Clan Gregor Society
to the winner of the Piobaireachd Competition at Balquhidder, Lochearnhead and
Strathyre Highland Games. This commemorates the MacGregor Piping School
which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries near the mouth of Glen Lyon.
Among the Clan's many eminent pipers was John MacGregor of Fortingall who, on
joining Prince Charlie at Glen Finnan in 1745, became his piper and personal
attendant. Although wounded at Culloden, John survived and in 1781, at the age of
73, won third prize at the Falkirk Tryst which claims to have been the forerunner of
the modern piping competitions held annually throughout Scotland. |
